today i saw a middle-aged man shouting obscenities at his mother, who looked the age of my grandmother.
he had tattoos on his arms, body and legs.
he pointed at her and called her names.
at one point, he even demanded $10 from her.
for his dinner, he claimed.
i was disgusted, and repulsed by how rude and insolent this man is.
if i have a son next time, i would not tolerate being hollered at like this.
i'll give him one tight slap for using all those vulgarities on me, and for having the cheek to ask me for money.
but i digress.
i was seated not too far away from the commotion, on the bus.
and i wondered why would any mother take all that shit from such a useless son.
i contemplated going up to him to ask him to shut up, or tell him he has no right to shout at his mother like that.
because it made me really angry when i saw him point his finger at her, shouting all those hokkien vulgarities and then asking for money like it's only right that she gave it to him.
but i was too quick to judge.
what now, if i tell you that his mother is an obsessive gambler?
what now, if i tell you that he shouted at her because of that?
and that he asked her for money only because it would be put to better use, than if she gambles it away.
are his actions then justified?
granted he is indeed rude and crude, but was it wrong for him to react this way, given this scenario?
i don't know.
why, who am i to judge?
and yet, many a time, we pass judgments too quickly.
"that guy has tattoos. he is bad."
"that girl has dyed hair. she must be a
lian."
i realised that many things in life do not fall into the black or white category.
most fall into the grey area; the shady area that people tend to overlook.
it's time we realised that not everything is black or white.
it's time we accepted the fact that there is a grey area, even though it'd be easier to overlook it.
there are reasons; and stories that go untold because of the reasons.
but humans being humans, would naturally judge it according to what's on the surface.
it's either good or bad. black or white.
there's no room for an in-between.
but now, i believe that man has a story of his own that went untold.
well, do you? :)
food for thought. haha.
